The Capital is the most violent place in India — even more than states
affected by Left wing extremism and insurgency, data from National
Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) suggests.
Delhi not only have reported the highest rate of violent crimes in the country but also found to be more prone to violence than states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) last year. The city reported 29 heinous crimes cases daily in 2013.
According to NCRB statistics, the Capital’s daily data of violent crime included 17 incidents of abduction, three robberies and rapes each and a case of murder and attempt to murder between January 1 and December 31, 2013.
Incidents such as riots and arson, too, were found to have been reported in Delhi every second day with every second criminal case to be registered at a police station in Delhi pertaining to violence.
“While Delhi reported 10,733 incidents of violent crime, Chhattisgarh recorded 6,857, Jharkhand 8,766, J&K 4,084 and Gujarat 8,951,” said a senior police officer, quoting the NCRB report.
“In Delhi, 1,245 robberies, 517 murders, 585 cases of attempt to murder, 1,636 rapes and as many as 6,294 cases of kidnapping and abduction were registered in 2013,” the officer added.
While the Delhi Police chose to dismiss these statistics as “mere figures bearing no actual resemblance to the threat or perception of crime on the streets”, they could not, however, deny that more than half the crimes that are reported in Delhi are of a violent and, usually, gruesome nature. The NCRB statistics say around 54.4% cases registered in Delhi are those of violent crimes.
Take, for instance, two recent incidents reported from south Delhi: the murder of a 20-year-old MBA student by his own friends in Vasant Kunj which was found to have been triggered by a complex love triangle and a brutal attack on a teenager by a man whom she had accused of molestation, and had dragged to court, in Vasant Vihar.
A comparison of Delhi’s rate of violent crime of 54.4% with that of other states is as telling as it is chilling: Violent crimes constituted only 27.4%, 27% and 33.95 of the total crimes reported in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and J&K, respectively.
Deepak Mishra, special CP (law & order) attributed the statistics to the registration of every case. “In Delhi, the protocol dictates the conversion of every complaint into a criminal case,” he said.
“We don’t contest these statistics but crime figures have been usually found to differ from the actual situation on the ground,” he said.
